A "GEM" of a Story
Gem Wheelchair & Scooter Service is the longest continuously run family-operated business in Flushing, NY. Founded by Edgar S. Bochner in 1951, Gem operated from its Northern Blvd store for its first 51 years. The business later expanded to its Union Tpke location in Fresh Meadows and, as of September 1st, 2024, Gem’s 73rd anniversary, boasts a modern and expansive showroom and repair center located at 179-24C Union Tpke.
In the 1950s and early 1960s, Ed and his team sold and serviced various home appliances, including vacuum cleaners, sewing machines, and typewriters. By 1961, Gem had become the go-to repair specialist for manual wheelchairs throughout NYC. With replacement parts scarce, Gem’s basement housed a cut-and-sew shop where they crafted custom seats, backs, and armrests. The chairs were stripped down, steam cleaned, and fitted with fresh upholstery, making them look and operate like new.
Battery-powered scooters, first manufactured by Amigo® Mobility in Michigan in 1969, have been a staple at Gem for the past 55 years. Gem also sells and services scooters from other top suppliers like Pride Mobility, Go-Go®, Golden Technologies, Luggie, Solax and WHILL.
The early 1970s saw the mass production of motorized wheelchairs by Everest & Jennings. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 spurred significant technological advancements in the industry.
Today, Gem continues to offer cutting-edge repair services and sales evaluations for major manufacturers such as Pride Mobility, Jazzy, Golden Technologies, Quantum, Permobil, Quickie, Travel Buggy, 21st Century Scientific, and WHILL, leading the way in independent mobility solutions.
After a successful career at Bloomingdale’s and Lord & Taylor, Ed’s son Jeff Bochner joined Gem in 1992, expanding their sales division. Jeff listened to clients who had long relied on Gem’s repairs and services, ensuring they could also trust Gem for product recommendations that best fit their lifestyle needs.
Gem’s services now include the sales and service of lightweight folding motorized wheelchairs and scooters, lift-to-stand recliner chairs, custom-built special positioning rehab chairs, molded seating systems, rollator walkers, canes, stairlifts, pressure relief cushions, bathroom safety equipment, and daily living adaptive accessories.
At Gem, we love assisting our clients! Our caring and devoted team believes that every day should be Independence Day, and we are committed to making that happen for you. The Gem family mourns the losses of Ed Bochner in 2015 and our chief mechanic of 40 years, Modesto Hernandez, in 2022.
We dedicate our continued service to their cherished memories. We take immense pride in the foundations they built and will always strive to uphold and continue the legacies they left behind.
Since 1951 Gem's mission has been to exceed the expectations of our mobility challenged clients by providing them with expert repairs, quality wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, lift-to-stand recliner chairs, stairway lifts, adjustable beds, aids to daily living and home care supplies. We believe that every day should be "Independence Day"
Through our care and service we have rooted belief that everyday should be your independence day! We aim to empower and provide mobility for all!
Gem is family owned & operated since 1951. We promise that we will personally listen to your special needs and concerns and suggest the best available options for you, based on our unrivaled expertise.

Customer Testimonials
The battery is the heart of your mobility scooter, powering your independence and mobility. To get the most out of your scooter’s battery, proper care and maintenance are essential. By following a few simple tips, you can extend the lifespan of your scooter battery, save money, and ensure consistent performance.
Scooter batteries are an investment, and taking care of them can:
Extend Lifespan: Prevent early degradation and save on replacement costs.
Improve Range: Maximize the distance your scooter can travel on a single charge.
Enhance Safety: Reduce risks of overheating, leaks, or failure.
Plug in your scooter after every use, even if the battery isn’t fully drained. This prevents deep discharges, which can damage the battery.
Avoid letting the battery drop below 20% before recharging.
Use the charger provided with your scooter or one specifically designed for your battery type.
Charging times vary; unplug the battery once fully charged to avoid overcharging.
Lithium-ion batteries can handle partial charges, but gel cell and AGM batteries perform best when charged fully.
Batteries should be stored at room temperature. Avoid areas with excessive heat or cold, which can damage the battery cells.
If you won’t be using your scooter for an extended period, store the battery at about 50% charge. Fully discharged or fully charged batteries degrade faster in storage.
For long-term storage, disconnect the battery from the scooter to prevent power drain.
Check the battery for visible signs of wear, such as swelling, cracks, or corrosion.
Inspect connections and terminals to ensure they’re clean and secure.
Wipe the battery case with a damp cloth to remove dirt and debris.
Use a terminal cleaner to prevent corrosion on connectors.
Faulty or worn-out parts like motors or controllers can strain the battery. Replace them promptly to reduce unnecessary power drain.
Stay within the weight capacity of your scooter to prevent overworking the battery.
Smooth, flat surfaces use less power than uneven or hilly terrain. Choose routes that are easier on your battery whenever possible.
Many scooters have an eco or power-saving mode that conserves battery life by reducing speed or power output.
Even with proper care, scooter batteries eventually need replacement. Signs it’s time to replace your battery include:
Reduced Range: The scooter doesn’t travel as far on a full charge.
Frequent Charging: The battery requires more frequent recharges.
Physical Damage: Visible wear, such as swelling or leaks.
When replacing your scooter battery, consider these factors:
Battery Type: Match your scooter’s requirements, whether gel cell, AGM, or lithium-ion.
Voltage and Capacity: Ensure the new battery has the correct specifications, such as 12V or 24V and the appropriate amp-hour (Ah) rating.
Trusted Brands: Opt for high-quality options like MK or Interstate Batteries for reliability and longevity.
Taking care of your scooter battery is a straightforward process that pays off in extended lifespan, improved performance, and fewer replacement costs. By charging regularly, storing properly, and maintaining your scooter, you can keep your battery in top shape for years.
