About Us

A "GEM" of a Story

Gem Wheelchair & Scooter Service is the longest continuously run family-operated business in Flushing, NY. Founded by Edgar S. Bochner in 1951, Gem operated from its Northern Blvd store for its first 51 years. The business later expanded to its Union Tpke location in Fresh Meadows and, as of September 1st, 2024, Gem’s 73rd anniversary, boasts a modern and expansive showroom and repair center located at 179-24C Union Tpke.

In the 1950s and early 1960s, Ed and his team sold and serviced various home appliances, including vacuum cleaners, sewing machines, and typewriters. By 1961, Gem had become the go-to repair specialist for manual wheelchairs throughout NYC. With replacement parts scarce, Gem’s basement housed a cut-and-sew shop where they crafted custom seats, backs, and armrests. The chairs were stripped down, steam cleaned, and fitted with fresh upholstery, making them look and operate like new.

Battery-powered scooters, first manufactured by Amigo® Mobility in Michigan in 1969, have been a staple at Gem for the past 55 years. Gem also sells and services scooters from other top suppliers like Pride Mobility, Go-Go®, Golden Technologies, Luggie, Solax and WHILL.

The early 1970s saw the mass production of motorized wheelchairs by Everest & Jennings. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 spurred significant technological advancements in the industry.

Today, Gem continues to offer cutting-edge repair services and sales evaluations for major manufacturers such as Pride Mobility, Jazzy, Golden Technologies, Quantum, Permobil, Quickie, Travel Buggy, 21st Century Scientific, and WHILL, leading the way in independent mobility solutions.

After a successful career at Bloomingdale’s and Lord & Taylor, Ed’s son Jeff Bochner joined Gem in 1992, expanding their sales division. Jeff listened to clients who had long relied on Gem’s repairs and services, ensuring they could also trust Gem for product recommendations that best fit their lifestyle needs.

Gem’s services now include the sales and service of lightweight folding motorized wheelchairs and scooters, lift-to-stand recliner chairs, custom-built special positioning rehab chairs, molded seating systems, rollator walkers, canes, stairlifts, pressure relief cushions, bathroom safety equipment, and daily living adaptive accessories.

At Gem, we love assisting our clients! Our caring and devoted team believes that every day should be Independence Day, and we are committed to making that happen for you. The Gem family mourns the losses of Ed Bochner in 2015 and our chief mechanic of 40 years, Modesto Hernandez, in 2022.

We dedicate our continued service to their cherished memories. We take immense pride in the foundations they built and will always strive to uphold and continue the legacies they left behind.

Our Mission

Since 1951 Gem's mission has been to exceed the expectations of our mobility challenged clients by providing them with expert repairs, quality wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, lift-to-stand recliner chairs, stairway lifts, adjustable beds, aids to daily living and home care supplies. Gel Cell vs. Lithium Batteries: Which Is Best for Mobility Devices?

Gel Cell vs. Lithium Batteries: Which Is Best for Mobility Devices?

December 17, 20243 min read

Choosing the right battery for your wheelchair or scooter is crucial for ensuring optimal performance, longevity, and safety. Two of the most popular options for mobility devices are gel cell and lithium batteries. Each has its own set of advantages and best-use cases, and understanding their differences can help you make an informed decision.

Overview of Gel Cell Batteries

What Are Gel Cell Batteries?

Gel cell batteries are sealed lead-acid batteries that use a gel-like electrolyte to power devices. They are spill-proof, maintenance-free, and commonly used in mobility equipment.

Advantages of Gel Cell Batteries

  • Safety: The sealed design prevents leaks, making them safe for indoor and outdoor use.

  • Durability: Resistant to vibration and rough handling, ideal for stable performance in various conditions.

  • Low Maintenance: Require no water refills or regular upkeep.

  • Affordability: Generally more cost-effective than lithium batteries.

Drawbacks of Gel Cell Batteries

  • Weight: Heavier than lithium batteries, which may make devices harder to transport.

  • Charging Time: Longer charging times compared to lithium batteries.

  • Shorter Lifespan: Typically last fewer charge cycles than lithium batteries.

Best Applications for Gel Cell Batteries

  • Users prioritizing safety and reliability on a budget.

  • Devices used in moderate daily activities, such as group 22 or group 24 battery setups.

  • Applications where portability is less critical.

Overview of Lithium Batteries

What Are Lithium Batteries?

Lithium-ion batteries are lightweight, high-performance power sources that pack a high energy density. They are becoming increasingly popular in advanced mobility devices.

Advantages of Lithium Batteries

  • Lightweight: Significantly lighter than gel cell batteries, making devices easier to transport.

  • Longer Lifespan: Can handle more charge cycles, lasting years longer than gel alternatives.

  • Fast Charging: Quick charging times for users on the go.

  • Energy Efficiency: Provide consistent power output for longer periods.

Drawbacks of Lithium Batteries

  • Cost: Higher upfront cost compared to gel cell batteries.

  • Compatibility: Not all mobility devices are designed for lithium batteries.

  • Safety Concerns: While rare, lithium batteries can overheat if improperly handled.

Best Applications for Lithium Batteries

  • Users who travel frequently or need a lightweight power source.

  • High-performance scooters or wheelchairs requiring extended range.

  • Applications where quick charging and portability are priorities.

How to Choose the Right Battery for Your Mobility Device

1. Evaluate Your Device’s Requirements

  • Check your device’s manual for compatible battery types. Some wheelchairs and scooters are designed specifically for gel or lithium batteries.

2. Consider Your Lifestyle

  • If you prioritize portability and long-distance travel, lithium batteries may be the better choice.

  • For stability and reliability on a budget, gel cell batteries are a solid option.

3. Budget and Long-Term Value

  • While lithium batteries cost more upfront, their longer lifespan can make them more cost-effective over time.

  • Gel cell batteries are ideal for users with lower initial budgets.

4. Charging Needs

  • If fast charging is essential for your routine, lithium batteries are a better fit.

  • For those who can accommodate longer charging times, gel cell batteries suffice.

Final Thoughts

Both gel cell and lithium batteries have unique strengths, and the best choice depends on your specific mobility needs, lifestyle, and budget. Gel cell batteries are reliable, affordable, and safe, while lithium batteries offer superior performance, portability, and longevity.

At Gem Wheelchair and Scooter Service, we carry high-quality gel cell and lithium batteries, including group 24 options, to power your mobility devices. Visitwheelchairsnyc.com or call 718-969-8600 to find the perfect battery for your wheelchair or scooter.
